Власти Миннеаполиса задержали экс-офицера полиции Дерека Чавена, подозреваемого в гибели 46-летнего афроамериканца Джорджа Флойда, который скончался в Миннеаполисе вскоре после задержания. Чавену предъявлено обвинение в непредумышленном убийстве.

Напомним, 25 мая полиция Миннеаполиса получила сообщение о том, что некий гражданин пытается использовать поддельные документы в кафе Cup Foods Minnesota. Прибыв к месту происшествия, стражи порядка обнаружили подозреваемого, Джорджа Флойда, и потребовали, чтобы он вышел из машины. Тот оказал сопротивление, в результате чего у него, по словам одного из полицейских, "возникли проблемы со здоровьем", и он умер в больнице. Позже в соцсетях было выложено видео задержания этого человека. На записи видно, как офицер полиции прижимает коленом шею Флойда, который лежит на асфальте, тот задыхается и произносит, что ему нечем дышать.

По следам этого происшествия четверо сотрудников полиции Миннесоты были уволены.

Предположительно, именно Чавен прижал шею Флойда коленом к земле во время задержания, что стало причиной смерти мужчины.В отношении еще трех полицейских, которые присутствовали на месте инцидента, проводится проверка.

Прокуратура отмечает, что обвинения предъявлены в рекордно короткие сроки, поскольку обычно в подобных ситуациях это занимает несколько месяцев.

С вечера 26 мая в Миннеаполисе начались массовые акции протеста. Полиция применяла спецсредства для разгона толпы. В ночь на 29 мая протестующие сожгли один из городских полицейских участков. 29 мая протесты против произвола полиции прошли еще в нескольких городах США.

Напомним, в 2014 году белый полицейский Даниэль Панталео, в ходе задержания чернокожего 43-летнего Эрика Гарнера применил удушающий прием. В результате Гарнер умер. Полиция утверждала, что Гарнер оказал сопротивление при аресте. Оправдание полицейского привело к массовым волнениям.

UPDATE.5: I wanted the President to take a tough stand on the violence, but those fighting words are just going to up the ante, and force a bloody confrontation.

Think of where we are as a country: 40 million unemployed; the economic wrecked by this pandemic, which is not close to being over; we’ve all endured 10 weeks of lockdown; a lot of people — not just inner-city black people — are angry and frustrated and scared and just waiting for something to go off.
